Match report: Quorn friendly 2/7/24 by Matt Jones

Captain Liam Daly leads our newly-formed team out for their first match.

Nuneaton Town headed to Quorn for their first match as a Community Interest Club.

Backed by around a hundred travelling fans eager to see the blue and white stripes on the field for the first time since Nuneaton Borough withdrew from the Southern League in January, and also the first time since the sad passing of Alan 'Chelsea' Hudson, for whom there was a minutes applause before the game, the new Boro started off brightly, keeping Quorn mostly in their own half with good pressing and passing.

It was Quorn who struck first however on 13 minutes, Paddy Webb lashing the home side ahead from just outside the box after good skill to beat his defender.

Boro responded well and Romario Martin got a curling shot away which was well held by the trialist keeper in goal for Quorn.

Quorn extended their lead on 28 minutes however, as a throw in was headed down to a trialist who gave Gilbert no chance from inside the box.

Boro still continued to work themselves chances, and got a bit of luck to get one back on 32 mins, as a clearance upfield was miskicked by a Quorn defender just inside his own half. Cody Mullan was first onto it and was quick to see the keeper well off his line and chipped it beautifully over him into the net.

Half time: Quorn 2-1 Nuneaton Town

Boro rang the changes in the second half, giving some trialists a go including in goal. The second half was a tighter affair, Boro pushing for the equaliser but trying not to concede again with the younger players on the pitch. Despite the youth Boro held their own until 82 minutes when Quorn extended their lead. A one-two into the box over the last defender left a one on one with the keeper and although the keeper got fingers to the shot from the Quorn trialist he was unable to keep it from going over the line.

Quorn dominated the final stages of the game as Boro started to tire, and could have extended their lead but for some wonderful saves from the trialist goalkeeper.
